Both Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin promise a second war Saturday night in the headline bout of UFC 106. At today’s final press conference, Ortiz said he will be 100% Saturday night in his return to UFC. “I’m still young at 34,” he told the media. “Randy Couture began his career at 34.” Regarding Griffin, Ortiz said, “The first fight, me and Forrest, we threw down. I’m glad Forrest stepped up.” Griffin said the fight would pick up where they left off, in 2006. “I’m excited to fight and you will be excited to watch,” said Griffin. Stay tuned for a full report.

In front of a capacity crowd at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas, 23 year old Jose Aldo TKO’ed Mike Brown to become the WEC featherweight champion in the second round of their scheduled five round contest. Brown had difficulty dealing with the trademark speed of Aldo in the first round as he attempted to close the distance and take his opponent down. In the second round the more confident Aldo began to unload with hard punches until he stunned Brown and took him to the mat. In the main event of UFC 104 controversy abounded as, after five incredibly close rounds, judges’ scored the bout 48-47 in favor of the Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida. Rounds one and two were highlighted by “Shogun” Rua’s strong commitment to landing hard kicks to the legs and body of the champion. Machida came alive in round three by exploding on the challenger with several snapping kicks and an explosive combination of straight punches. Rua punished the body of Machida in round four and badly bruised the ribs of “The Dragon.” The final round saw the chess match continue as Machida ate a number of leg and body kicks. With this win Machida moves to a perfect 16-0 and becomes the first light heavyweight champion to successfully defend his belt since September of 2007.

Machida-Rua: Expect fireworks!

UFC 104 is LIVE on PPV Oct. 24!

Final presser report by Andreas Hale

After September 22nd of 2007, if you predicted that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua would be fighting Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida for the light heavyweight championship, mixed martial arts pundits may have called you  insane.

You see, September 22nd was the day both Machida and Rua fought at UFC 76. Machida was just getting his feet wet in the UFC and scored a unanimous decision over Kazuhiro Nakamura. Rua was introduced to the Octagon by a Forrest Griffin rear naked choke that shocked the entire world of MMA. People were skeptical of both Rua and Machida. The future of “Shogun” was in question as was considered to be possibly past his prime and on the fast track downhill while “The Dragon” and his awkward karate style may have been winning fights – but not in spectacular fashion. . . .
