Khutsidze wins controversially

Nuzhnenko outpoints Yakovenko in co-feature

By Alexey Sukachev

WBA #4 middleweight Avtandil Khurtsidze (20-1-2, 13 KOs) was lucky to be awarded with a dubious eight-round TKO over Uzbek veteran Kuvanych Toygonbayev (30-6, 19 KOs) moments ago at Budivelnik sports arena in Cherkasy, Ukraine. Headlining a nice-packed little tournament, arranged there by K2 East Promotions, Kiev-based Georgian Khurtsidze, who spent the first part of his pro career overseas before being stopped by Tony Marshall in May 2005, retained both his WBA I/C (for the fourth time) and EBA (for the first time) titles simultaneously. Munroe defeats Maludrottu

By Alexey Sukachev

In a two-way all-action brawl, Leicester native Rendall Munroe (now 20-1, 8 KOs) both retained his EBU super bantamweight title and won the final WBC 122lb title eliminator over Italian veteran and ex-world title challenger Simone Maludrottu (30-3, 11 KOs) moments ago at Harvey Hadden Leisure Center in Nottingham, UK. The contest was fought in close quarters with both combatants not giving a single inch to each other in toe-to-toe storm of light but rapidly fired punches. Maludrottu, WBC #12, took the first haf of the clash but Munroe, who was ranked WBC #2, WBA #4, IBF #11 and WBO #14, got stronger down the stretch. The Italian fighter tried to turn back the tide in the last round but it was too little from him and too late. All three judges saw it unanimously in Munroe’s favor: 116-112 (twice) and 115-113. Fightnews scored it 116-112 – also for the British fighter.

Kuroda defeats Llanos

By Joe Koizumi

Japanese light-fly prospect, JBC#6 Masayuki Kuroda (15-3, 11 KOs), 108.75, defeated OPBF#2 ranked Filipino Nelson Llanos (19-19-2, 9 KOs), 108.25, by a unanimous decision (79-74 twice and 78-74) over eight hot rounds on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan. The taller Japanese, handled by ex-OPBF champ Shosei Nitta, made a good start, sweeping the first four rounds. But Llanos, a much shorter infighter, recklessly mixed it up to be in command in the fifth and sixth, boring in with a two-fisted attack, plus his third punch (headbutt) against which referee Fukuchi often gave him warnings. Though Kuroda suffered gashes on both eyebrows, he showed a last surge down the stretch to score an important victory. Llanos complained of a slippery canvas, but showed a good fight. Promoter: Nitta Promotions.

Vicente edges Lorenzo

By Robert Coster

It was billed as a Dominican “Civil War” and it turned out to be exactly that. A war. Former Jr lightweight contender Francisco Lorenzo, 130, and prospect Jenifel Vicente, 127, battered each other for 10 rounds, bringing the crowd at the Teo Cruz Coliseum in Santo Domingo to its feet. The early part of the incredibly violent slugfest belonged to the veteran Lorenzo (34-7, 15 KOs), much more pedigreed than his young opponent. Vicente (15-0-2, 9 KOs) however turned things around in the second portion of the bout as the older fighter began to tire. The fight was up for grabs until the last round and Vicente just did a little more in the last minutes to escape with a razor thin split decision. It was a memorable battle that will have Dominican fans talking for a while. Also on the seven-bout card offered by Manguita Promotions, jr welterweight prospect Julio Reyes (13-0) won a rather controversial 8th round TKO over unlucky Franklin Gonzalez (12-2).

cozzone_pacquiaoVScotto_1355In an amazing, violent fight, Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs) stopped WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs) in round twelve to win another world title in an unprecedented seventh weight division on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Both fighters were on the attack from the opening bell. Pacman dropped Cotto with a right hook in round three. Cotto dominated round four, but was dropped by a left uppercut at the end of the round. Cotto fought courageously but was rocked again in the sixth by Pacman’s hurtful shots coming in from all angles. Cotto began to box from the outside in the seventh with some success. However, Pacquiao continued to stalk him and break him down. Cotto was in survival mode down the stretch. Referee Kenny Bayless finally waved in off in round twelve. Time was :55.

Chavez’ harder punches earned him a 99-91, 98-92, 97-93 victory. John Duddy has been mentioned as a possible future opponent for Chavez, who was officially fighting as a full-fledged middleweight for the first time. It’s possible that Chavez could see action on Top Rank’s December 19 Latin Fury card in Cancun.

By Ron Jackson

Samuel Malinga was just too big and strong for Pius Dipheko and stopped him the fifth round to win the WBO Africa interim junior welterweight title at the Wembley Indoor Arena in Johannesburg on Saturday night. The former WBF and SA champion systematically wore down the gutsy Dipheko (62.94 kg) who tried to slug it out with Malinga (62.76 kg) rather than to stick and run which is his normal boxing style. By Ron Jackson

Unbeaten South African welterweight champion Chris van Heerden knocked out Venance Mponji from Tanzania after just 102 seconds in the first round of a bout scheduled for ten in Meyerton on Friday night. Mponji (65.50 kg) came out fast at the bell taking the fight to Van Heerden (66.16 kg) who backed off against his smaller opponent. However, the aggressive Mponji was unable to penetrate Van Heerden’s defence. Fighting off his back foot the southpaw South African calmly took everything thrown at him by Mponji before stepping in with a short right to the body that dropped the Tanzanian on his back where he took the full count from referee Alfred Buqwana. Isaev defeats Campos

By Shamus Young at ringside

Junior Lightweight Andrey Isaev improved to 22-1 with a ten round majority decision over Derrick Campos (20-10) at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA. Campos appeared to be the stronger of the two men and brought the action with a straightforward slugging style. Isaev is a lanky fighter, but he gives up his height and reach advantages by hunching over and rarely using his jab. Isaev had the faster hands, straighter punches, and solid inside fighting technique, which he used to win most exchanges. Campos survived cuts over both eyes to stage a late rounds rally, but it wasn’t enough to get the win. Judges had it 96-94 twice, and 95-95. Fightnews had it 99-91 for Isaev. Continued »

Shibata wins OPBF 154lb belt

Smith edges Quigley

By Alexey Sukachev

In a grueling clinchfest, Paul Smith (28-1, 15 KOs) wrestled the British national super middleweight title with a split decision over previous titlist Scott Quigley (13-2, 6 KOs) at Echo Arena in Liverpool. Both fighters turned the contest into an ugly and uneventful stinker with a lot of grappling and wreslting. Quigley was a better man throughout the first half of the fight but the challenger proved to be stronger down the stretch. Neither fighter was ever rocked except for a badly tired champion during the last round. Smith was cut over his right eye in the tenth. At the end two judges saw it in favour of the local hero: 116-113 and 116-112, while the third one scored the contest for Scott Quigley: 114-116. This reporter saw it 115-114 – for Quigley, and SKY Sports’ analyst and former world champion Jim Watt made it a draw – 114-114.

James DeGale (4-0, 3 KOs), 2008 Beijing middleweight gold medalist for the United Kingdom, stopped an unbeaten but hugely overmatched Ally Morrison (2-1-1) at the beginning of the third. DeGale used his fascinating speed and reflexes to frustrate his foe in the first couple of rounds. In round three, former amateur star went in for kill and got the job done with a series of powerful left hooks. Morrison wasn’t been down but looked dazed enough for the referee to stop the contest.
—–
Another British Olympian Frankie Gavin (4-0, 4 KOs) easily notched his fourth consecutive knockout win with the second-round stoppage of shorter and hugely overmatched Steve Saville (19-7, 8 KOs). 24-year old Gavin was all over the veteran from the beginning, punishing him mercilessly at the ropes. At 0:27 of the second round, Saville was downafter a quick counter combo by Gavin. He got himself upright but was too shaky to be allowed to fight on by the referee.
