2012 Olympian Falcao gets DQ’d in pro debut

The highly anticipated pro debut of 2012 Olympic middleweight bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao ended in disaster Saturday night when both he and his opponent Fidel “El Terrible” Rios (9-0-2, 3 KOs) were surprisingly disqualified after round two at the Arena Santos in Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The fight got out of hand when both fighters continued to punch after the bell in round two and referee Jose Bezerra controversially DQ’d both of them rather than issuing a warning or deducting points. With no winner, the official result will be a no contest. Both fighters were enraged by the call and want a rematch.

In the main event, unbeaten featherweight Adeilson Dos Santos (13-0, 10 KOs) scored a sixth round TKO over Carlos Gaston Suarez (6-3, 1 KO). The card was Golden Boy Promotions first event in Brazil.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
