The IBF will kick off the 2014 sanctioning body convention season with it’s 31st annual convention in Atlantic City at the Resorts Hotel and Casino from May 18-22. This year’s convention boasts the theme of “Back where it all began,” as the IBF formed in 1983 during the USBA convention in Atlantic City. Starting in late 1983 and continuing over the next year, the IBF staged inaugural title fights around the world in all of boxing’s weight divisions, even creating the Super Middleweight division along the way.
The highlight of this year’s convention will surely be the gathering of many of those inaugural champs from lightweight up to heavyweight so that they maybe recognized as the first IBF world champions in their respective weight classes. Champs such as Charlie “Choo Choo” Brown, Donald Curry, Mark Medal, Murray Sutherland, Michael Spinks, Marvin Camel and Larry Holmes will be on hand to receive their recognition at the awards banquet on Wednesday, May 21st.
There will be a “Meet the Champs” cocktail event featuring several past and current champs such as Meldrick Taylor, Charles Brewer, Lamont Peterson, Bernard Hopkins, Amnat Ruenroeng, Jonriel Casimero and mong others.
As always there will be business at hand such as ratings, mandatory defenses, ring officials seminars, financial reports and of course, discussions on the 2015 convention. At last years gathering in Berlin, South Korea was given the preliminary nod to host in 2015. If that goes through, there maybe an opportunity to gather the lower weighted half of the inaugural IBF champs for a reunion as the majority of the “little guys” were from South Korea. Stay tuned for full reports from Atlantic City on Sunday, May 18, 2014.
