This Friday marks the return of Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell (23-4, 22 KOs) to the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, PA. Abell, of Coon Rapid, MN, will take on Billy “The Kid” Willis (12-13-1, 9 KOs), of Houston, TX in the eight round heavyweight main event. Abell is coming off three consecutive first round knockout victories. In the co-feature, Kevin Carmody (10-11-2, 1 KO), of Philadelphia will face Fernando Basora (8-4-1, 7 KOs), of Isabela, Puerto Rico in an eight round welterweight bout. The promoter is Vernoca Michael’s Blue Horizon Boxing.
Joey Abell will be making his tenth appearance at the Blue Horizon, which has turned into his home away from home. Abell is in the process of rebuilding a career that has seen his high point come in a televised decision victory over then-unbeaten Teke Oruh. Abell pecked and jabbed his way to a nice victory, but received unjust criticism for a lackluster fight against the defensive minded Oruh.
Abell followed up with two second round knockouts, one in Sweden and one at the Blue Horizon, before disaster struck. Abell was shocked by journeyman Andrew Greeley in his home state, and then lost a split decision to ancient former world champion Alfred “Ice” Cole. Two months later, Abell was disqualified for hitting Jason Nicholson while he was down. Joey has since reeled off three straight victories.
Gee Cullmer (15-1, 3 KOs) takes on Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor (13-21-3, 6 KOs) in an eight round middleweight bout. This fight is a rematch of a 2004 bout, won by Cullmer.
Julias Edmonds (5-3) will face Jose Tiburcio (3-1, 1 KO) in a six round junior welterweight bout. Edmonds is coming off a nice decision win over Tyric Robinson in his last bout.
Unbeaten Joselito Collado (7-0, 2 KOs) will face Darrell Martin (4-8, 1 KO) on a six round junior lightweight bout.
Taneal Goyco (2-0, 1 KO) and Davit Davitshvili (0-2) will engage in a rematch of their four round cruiserweight bloodbath of last April.
Nakidi Ku-Ntima and Walter Tyler will make their pro debuts in a four round heavyweight bout.
Achmad Tuba will make his pro debut against Vincent Batteast (0-0-1) in a four round junior middleweight bout.
Tickets are priced at $45, $55, $65, $125, and $200.
Doors open at 6:30PM. First bout: 7:30PM
