Abregu rips into Maidana

Undefeated welterweight contender Carlos Abregu (29-0, 23 KOs) is fighting undefeated WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley in a non-title bout at welterweight poundage on July 17 at Agua Caliente Casino • Resort • Spa in Rancho Mirage, California. But another 140-pounder, WBA interim super lightweight champion Marcos Maidana, is very much on his mind. “As a citizen of Argentina, I’m embarrassed to call him my countryman,” said Abregu, who is training at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn. “Even though I was the only one who stepped up to fight Bradley when he first landed a date for HBO debut, I stepped back to allow Maidana to unify the title, but he wouldn’t even risk his own belt when the fight was first made. Well after I give Bradley his first professional loss, I’ll be more than happy to give Maidana the same opportunity to fight me at welterweight so he can keep his precious interim title. Because that is all he will have left after I ice him. He’s a disgrace to Argentina and its rich boxing heritage. He’s also a liar.”

For 18 years, Fightnews.com® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
