Acelino “Popo” Freitas to return again?

By Gabriel F. Cordero

A source informed that there is a possibility that 37-year-old Brazilian former world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas could fight again after his successful return in 2012 following five years in retirement. According to the source, Freitas could return later this 2013 for a fight to benefit the Aristides Maltez Cancer Hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Popo’s father was hospitalized in this hospital before his death. Freitas could fight in the new Fonte Nova Stadium with capacity for 50,000 fans in Salvador, Bahia. One possibility would be a rematch against former Argentinian world champion Jorge Barrios. According to the source there is nothing formal, but it is a project that is under consideration and Freitas is seeking support from the government and private companies.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
