After a decade of waiting, Fres Oquendo poised to become WBA heavyweight world champion

By Przemek Garczarczyk

“It’s more than 10 years since my last fight for world heavyweight championship. I waited long enough for my chance and want to be a champ NOW,” said Fres Oquendo from his Chicago training camp in a interview. “I know that Chagaev is a good fighter, that he also wants this WBA belt, but I want it more. I will prove that in Grozny!” The previously postponed fight for WBA regular belt between Fres Oquendo (37-7, 24 KOs) and former champ Ruslan Chagaev (32-2, 20 KOs) will happen in Grozny, Chechnya on July 6.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
