Unbeaten Jose Aguiniga will return to the ring on September 22nd against Gilberto Sanchez-Leon, Southern California matchmaker Hervi Estrada told Fightnews.com on Monday night. The 10 round bout will headline an El Dorado Entertainment card at Pacifica High School in Oxnard, CA.
“Sanchez-Leon’s people verbally agreed to the fight today (Monday),” said Estrada.
Aguiniga was scheduled to fight this past Friday night against Gabriel Tolmajyan in Richmond, CA in a televised bout on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.” However, the card fell through when both fighters in the main event, Karim Mayfield and Mauricio Herrera, suffered injuries that during training camp, forcing them to withdraw from the card.
Suitable fighters for a televised main event were not able to be found, forcing the card to change promoters’ hands and to move to Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, OK.
Aguiniga (33-0, 15 KOs) resumed his boxing career earlier this year following a nearly five-year layoff due to financial and weight issues. The Oxnard boxer won a one-sided eight round unanimous decision over Juan Ruiz in February, before stopping Eduardo Arcos in the seventh round of his last fight on May 26th.
He is now co-trained by his older brother Mario and Ruben Juarez.
Sanchez-Leon (32-11-2, 12 KOs) hails from Mexicali, Baja California, México. In his last bout on July 13th, Sanchez-Leon lost a six round majority decision to Sergio Perez. It has been his only bout of 2012 thus far after having fought five times in 2011.
Matchmaker Estrada has confirmed a number of local boxers and fights that will take place on the card.
Hard-hitting Irving Garcia (8-1, 5 KOs) of Oxnard will fight an opponent to be determined.
Popular lightweight boxer Crystal Morales (6-8-1, 1 KO) of Oxnard will fight Celine Roman (2-1) in a scheduled four round bout.
Lightweight Oscar Diaz (3-1-1, 1 KO) of Oxnard will fight Alejandro Artiaga (3-6, 1 KO) in a scheduled four round bout.
19 year old Abraham Morales (1-0, 1 KO) of Oxnard will fight Edgar Flores (0-6) in a scheduled four round bout.
Tickets are priced at $50 for ringside and $25 for general admission. High school or college students can purchase general admission tickets for $20, providing they have proper identification.
Children under the age of five are admitted free.
Pacifica High School, which opened in 2001, is located within walking distance of the famed La Colonia Gym.
Tickets can be purchased at the El Dorado restaurant in Oxnard or by calling (805) 483-1919.
