Ammeth Diaz stays home, title challenge against Titere Vazquez is cancelled

This Saturday’s scheduled mandatory title defense between IBF lightweight champion Miguel “Titere” Vazquez and Panamanian Ammeth Diaz in Tijuana was cancelled when the challenger’s team did not take the flight to Mexico. The Vazquez camp is hoping the IBF will decide to appoint a new challenger within 15 days, since Vazquez previously had defeated Diaz by one-sided decision.

The Diaz camp says they belatedly received the plane tickets from Zanfer for a Thursday night arrival which doesn’t leave sufficient time to recover for Friday’s weigh-in and Saturday’s fight. They expect no reprisals from the IBF regarding Diaz’ mandatory challenger status and feel he will still get a chance to fight Vasquez.

Saturday’s new main event at the Foro Tecate in Tijuana will be unbeaten bantamweight Daniel “Bad Boy” Rosas (16-0-1, 11 KOs) against Juan Alberto “Topo” Rosas (38-7-0, 27 KOs) in a ten-rounder that was previously the co-feature.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
