Andre “S.O.G.”Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) was relaxed and quick to smile Monday – before a serious, sweat-drenched workout.
“Fighting three times this year, I’m in a great rhythm,” Ward said before an hour’s hard work on the heavy bag and speed bag. “We’re working as hard as ever, don’t get me wrong, but having had two fights this year, I felt like I was getting right into it almost immediately.”
Ward is set to face WBO, WBA and IBF light heavyweight world champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (30-0-1, 26 KOs) on Nov. 19 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View.
The 32-year-old said his body can let him know he’s not 22, but trainer Virgil Hunter has to rein him in.
“I feel great and I always want to go 100 miles an hour, but Virgil reins me in,” said Ward, who fought Sullivan Barrera in March and Alexander Brand in August. “He’ll say, ‘We’re sparring six rounds today and that’s it,” or, “We’re gonna be in the gym for 90 minutes and get out of there,’ and he’s making the right calls.”
