As returning heavyweight David Haye officially announced his June 29th fight with the once-beaten Manuel Charr at today’s press conference in Manchester, it was also announced that the main supporting bout at The Manchester Arena will be an intriguing lightweight clash between Anthony Crolla, 25-4-1(9) and Gavin Rees, 37-2-1(18).
32-year-old Welshman Rees, last seen giving his all but falling short against the classy Adrien Broner, is a former WBA light-welterweight champ, with the British and European 135-pound belts also captured, while Manchester’s 26-year-old Crolla, last seen boxing a draw with Derry Matthews in their anticipated rematch, is a former British champion. Both guys need a win on June 29th and a good, hard fight can be expected.
“I cannot wait to get back into action,” Rees said. “I am itching to get another world title shot after fighting Broner. I feel that I can win another world title and this is a massive fight to prove I still have ambitions at that level.
“Anthony is a very good fighter. All-British clashes are always great to be a part of. This fight has been on the cards for a while now. I’m putting everything to practice that I learnt in the Broner fight and [I will] take out Crolla in his backyard.”
The word is, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom will also have a number of his other name fighters on the card.
