Former South African heavyweight champion Anton Nel having his first fight since November 2006 stopped Pieter Cronje at 48 seconds into the first round at the Carousel gambling resort in Hammanskraal on Saturday night. The 41-year-old Nel (118.32kg) came out firing at the opening bell and after scoring with a stiff jab followed up with some crippling shots to the body. With Cronje, 27, backing off and not fighting back referee Thabo Spampoel stepped in to call the fight off. Nel improves his record to 16-11-3; 12 and Cronje (102.57kg) who was having his first fight since campaigning in Australia for two years saw his record drop to 9-4-1; 5. The bout which was scheduled for 10 rounds was an eliminator for the South African heavyweight title held by Osborne Machimana.
In a junior heavyweight bout Alex Mbaya from the Democratic Republic of Congo stopped former South African middleweight and light heavyweight champion Soon Botes 27-14; 16 in the eighth round.
Heavyweight prospect Johnny Muller was surprisingly held to a draw over six rounds by Wiseman Dlomo.
