“Apache” passes away

Former Juarez veteran Santos “Apache” Moreno has passed away. Moreno, a native of Miguel Auza, Zacatecas, came to the border in 1976 where he turned pro under trainer Tony Martinez. Over the next 16 years, “Apache” fought 41 times, winning 21, losing 19, with one no-contest. His last bout was against Roger Mayweather in December 1990 in Las Vegas, in which he was TKO’d in three. Moreno also fought Vince Phillips, Hector Lopez, Ruben Castillo (whom he defeated by split verdict), Rafael Limon, Nicky Perez and Calvin Grove. He also fought for the NABF super bantamweight belt three times and the Mexican featherweight title twice. After retirement, Moreno continued on in the fight game as a trainer, overlooking the careers of his sons. Flyweight Alejandro “Apachito” Moreno (21-24-3, 10 KOs) is most known. –Chris Cozzone
