Arslan, Menzer return July 3

Universum Box-Promotion has announced a “Universum Champions Night” twinbill for July 3rd at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, Germany. The card will feature female superstar Ina Menzer against an opponent to be named and former WBA cruiserweight champion Firat Arslan (29-4-1, 18 KOs) facing Steve Herelius (19-1-1, 11 KOs) for the interim WBA belt. Arslan lost his WBA title to Guillermo Jones in September 2008, but Jones, who turns 38 next week, hasn’t defended the belt since and is in danger of being stripped due to inactivity.

Last June, shortly before a fight against the current WBO champion Marco Huck, Arslan suffered serious injuries in a bicycling accident in the Alps. “Only few days before I was on a training ride and I fell quite horribly in the Austrian mountains and had to be brought by helicopter to the hospital,” said Arslan. “I had torn neck muscles and numerous fractures. It was far from clear whether I could even walk again, let alone box. If I had not been wearing a strong body brace, it would certainly have been even even worse. But now all is well again. So I’m burning for this opportunity. I want to get my WBA belt back!”

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
