By Miika Forsström

Former European middleweight champion Amin Asikainen (26-3, 17 KOs) of Finland starts his campaign at super middleweight division May 11th in Kirkkonummi, Finland. Asikainen, who has been inactive since his shocking loss to Matthew Macklin in September 2009, takes on unbeaten Dario Armando Matorras (12-0, 7 KOs) of Argentina in his hometown to start his career at super middleweight division.

Asikainen, who beat some quality fighters such as Sebestian Sylvester, Yori Boy Campas and Lorenzo Di Giacomo at middleweight has won 26 of his 29 bouts. His only losses came in European title fights are to Sylvester in the rematch, Khoren Gevor and Macklin. Dario Armando Matorras has won all of his 12 bouts in much inferior level.

Pekka Mäki, the manager and trainer of Asikainen is in no hurry to get his man back into title fights.

“I am sure that Amin can be successful at super middleweight division, but we need move up step by step. We want to win a title, not just get into some title fight. Amin will have about three fights before he will fight for an meaningful title again”, Mäki states.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
