Aussie Boxing Update

It was a big weekend of boxing Down Under with fight cards in Brisbane, Southport, and Sydney.

It all started on Friday when Australian super middleweight prospect Bilal Akkaway (5-0, 5 KOs) scored a second round stoppage over over New Zealand’s, Fili Mailata (4-20-1, 2 KOs) in the main event at the Croation Club, Sydney, New South Wales.

Akkaway dropped the import three times in round two and the referee crowned Akkaway the winner at 2:11. Akkaway is the son of former amateur and professional star Michael who is currently one of Australia’s leading trainers. Mailata was very experienced having been in action against former world rated Robert Medley also Kurt Bahram, Tui Leveni and had taken the hard hitting Steve Heremaia the distance twice.

In the main supporting contest, cruiserweight Shane Quinn (2-1-1, 1 KO) stopped veteran Walter Pupu’a (12-20, 8 KOs) in round three of a scheduled six. Referee Anthony Shipley crowned Quinn at 1:20 of the round. Pupu’a has boxed several well credentialed boxers including Rayco Saunders of the USA and highly regarded Aussies Brad Pitt, Anthony McCracken and former world rated Paul Murdoch.

In other action, super middleweight Michael Van Nimgen (6-2, 3 KOs) had his contest with Peter Tovio (2-15-1,2KO) declared a no contest at 2:50 of round one

Also light welterweight Cameron Glass (1-0, 1 KO) stopped Kayne Chapman (0-4) at 1:58 of round four.

Australian cruiserweight Adam Lovelock (6-3) outscored Jae Bryce (2-4) over ten rounds in the main event at the Matrix Gymnasium at Southport, Queensland, Australia on Saturday. Lovelock holds the Queensland state title.

In the main supporting contest, light heavyweight Dennis Arthur (3-2, 2 KOs) stopped Amir Hossein Randjar (11-16) at the conclusion of round three of a scheduled ten.

Also super middleweight Rohan Murdock (8-1, 6 KOs) stopped Thailand’s, Dechapon Suwunnalird (5-22) in round four of a scheduled ten. Time 1:41

Cruiserweight Kyle Brumby (1-9-1) outpointed Daniel Cronin (0-1) over four rounds

Light heavyweight Dane Mulivai (2-0, 2 KOs) stopped Nuapayak Wor Wilai (0-1) in round two. Time 1:54.

Australian based Japanese southpaw lightweight Takashi Sugura (6-1, 5 KOs) forced a four round stoppage over Filipino Allan Jay Tuniacao (3-5-8, 2 KOs) in the main event at the Fortitude Stadium, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia on Saturday. Sugura controlled all contested rounds with superior work rate and at the conclusion of round four the corner of Tuniacao retired their boxer.

In main support light welterweight Ty Gilchrist (6-0, 2 KOs) outscored Jezze Carrasco (2-1-1) over four rounds by scores 40-37, 39-37, 38-38.

In other action heavyweight Josh Robertson (3-0,2KOs) stopped Joe Loyd (1-1-0) in round one. Time 2:45.

Also featherweight Jarrett Owen (2-1, 1 KO) outpointed Stanley Hogg (0-1) over three rounds. 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.
