Avila still unbeaten

In a clash of junior featherweight prospects, unbeaten local hero Manuel “Tino” Avila (11-0, 4 KOs) thrilled his fans with a spectacular eighth round KO over Ricky Lopez (9-2, 4 KOs) on Saturday night at the Georgie Duke Sports Center in Vacaville, California. Avila dropped Lopez in round three and twice in round eight. Time was 1:09. Lopez is a cousin of Mile Alvarado.

Welterweight Alan Sanchez (12-2-1, 6 KOs) scored a second round TKO over veteran Miguel Munguia (26-26-1, 16 KOs). Sanchez knocked down Munguia in round two and the bout was waved off shortly after. Time was 1:43.

In a rare five-rounder, super bantamweight Pablo Cupul (6-10, 4 KOs) dropped a highly questionable unanimous decision to Bruno Escalante (6-1-1, 3 KOs). Escalante won by scores of 49-46, 49-46, 48-47.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
