A purse bid was held today at WBA headquarters in Panama for the mandatory fight between WBA super middleweight champion Karoly Balzsay (25-2, 18 KOs) and interim titlist Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KOs). The Magee camp won the right to promote the fight with a bid of $287,700, outbidding Balszay promoter Universum by $20,000.
Universum chief Kluch Waldemar, who himself traveled to Panama, is confident that Balzsay will retain his title regardless where the fight is held. “This purse bid is certainly not a defeat for us. Without TV network backing, you have to make economically sensible bids. I am sure that Balzsay will be perfectly prepared to fight and he’ll bring the belt back home,”said Kluch. The fight will be held on either July 7 or July 14 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
