Bantamweight tourney resumes

On Friday night, June 18th, Zanfer Promotions returns to Tijuana’s Municipal Auditorium with their “Guante Azteca (Aztec Glove)” series. The night will be the second round of their bantamweight tournament with the winner pocketing $5,000 cash plus immediate inclusion in their national tournament, “Campeon Azteca (Aztec Champion)”, broadcast on he Azteca channel. Also on Friday night, the first round of the super lighweight tournament will be contested.

In the bantamweight main event, Mexicali, MX’s Daniel Quevedo (10-10, 6KOs) will face Oscar Gallardo of San Luis Rio Colorado, MX, in a four round battle. In another tournament contest, Jesus Navarro (16-3-1, 13KOs) also of Mexicali, MX, takes on Tijuana, MX’s Jose Tamayo (1-7), also for four rounds.

In the first fight of the super lightweight tournament, Rafael Cobos (11-4-2, 3KOs) of Tijuana takes on hard hitting Javier “Pelon” Gomez (9-4, 6KOS) while favorite Misael Castillo (14-0, 13KO) of Ensenada, MX, faces Tijuana’s Cesar Sanchez (0-1-2). The experienced Humberto Tapia (15-13-1, 8KOs) of Tijuana is also part of the tournament when he goes against Jesus Gurrola (12-1-1, 5KOs) of Mexicali. In the last of the tournament bouts, Gabriel Rosales (4-3, 1KO) will go against Luis Rey Compoa (7-4-1, 5KOs) of San Luis Rio Colorado, MX. All the tournament bouts are scheduled for four rounds.

In a special attraction eight round light welterweight contest, two time lighweight champion Jose Luis “Temible” Castillo (60-10-1, 52KOs) of Mexicali, MX, returns to the ring after his disappointing loss to Alfonso Gomez late last year to face Roberto “Viejo” Valenzuela (51-52-2, 42KOs) of Agua Prieta, MX.

Fleshing out the card is jr. flyweight Maximino Flores (4-0, 4KOs) of Ensenada, MX, versus late sub Sergio Nuñez (0-3) of Tijuana in a four rounder and in a four round super bantamweight bout, Tijuana’s Alex Lopez (3-0, 2KOs) going against Ensenada’s Igancio Mondragon (0-6). Undefeated flyweight Hanzel Martinez (7-0, 6KOs) of Tijuana versus Ramon Mondragon (0-1) of Ensenada.

Doors open at 6:30pm with the first punch thrown at 7:30pm at Tijuana’s Municipal Auditorium. Tickets can be bought at the Audirorium’s box office for 100 pesos ($8.33 US) and 50 pesos ($4.16 US).
