Super bantamweight contender (WBA No. 1/IBF No. 5/WBO No. 2) Antonio Escalante (22-2, 14 KOs) will headline a Golden Boy-promoted, ESPN2-televised card Feb. 26 in his hometown of El Paso, Texas. Right now, it’s looking like the opponent will be border rival Miguel “Mickey” Roman (28-6, 20 KOs), of Juarez. The two were born and raised in the same neighborhood in Juarez and a showdown between the two is expected to draw on both sides of the border. The bout will also mark a return to the border for Roman who, prior to 2008, was a consistent headliner at the Poliforo in Juarez.
Lightweight Javier “El Zorro” Castro (22-2, 18 KOs), also of El Paso/Juarez, will be taking on Ameth Diaz (26-9, 19 KOs), of Panama City, for the WBA Fedebol lightweight title on Jan. 21. A legal dispute between longtime promoter, Promociones del Pueblo, of Juarez, and Promociones Istmo, of Panama, for contractual rights over Castro has also commenced.
