Bellew-Chilemba, Mathews-Crolla both end in draws

In an important WBC light heavyweight eliminator, hometown favorite Tony Bellew (19-1-1, 12 KOs) and Isaac Chilemba (20-1-2, 9 KOs) fought to a draw over twelve rounds on Saturday night the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. It was a tactical fight. Bellew was the aggressor over the first half of the fight, while Chilemba showed some nifty defensive moves. Trainer Buddy McGirt gave Chilemba a tongue-lashing after round six, telling him to push Bellew back. Chilemba responded and came on over the second half of the fight. Scores were 116-115 Bellew, 116-112 Chilemba, and 114-114.

In a much anticipated rematch of the 2012 British Fight of the Year, lightweight Anthony Crolla (25-4-1, 9 KOs) and Derry Mathews (32-8-2, 17 KOs) battled to a twelve round draw in a bout for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title. Scores were 115-113 Mathews, 115-113 Crolla and 115-115 in a good action fight that featured many ebbs and flows. Looks like a Mathews-Crolla III is coming soon.

Unbeaten super middleweight Rocky Fielding (12-0, 6 KOs) scored a sixth round KO over Wayne Reed (10-6, 5 KOs) to win the vacant English title. Impressive performance from “Rocky from Stocky,” who dropped Reed in round four and twice in round six. Time was 1:19.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
