Southpaw Jason Bergman (21-10 14 KOs) captured the vacant NABA-US Heavyweight Title by 1st round knockout over previously unbeaten John L. Smith (13-1-1) Saturday night at the Green Tree Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bergman landed a looping left dropping Smith early in the initial stanza. After Smith beat the count, Bergman proceeded to land a barrage of punches sending Smith to the canvas again for several minutes. The official time of the stoppage was 1:59.
WBA #15 “Lightning” Rod Salka (18-2) defended his NABA-US lightweight strap via a ten round unanimous decision over Ryan Belasco (18-6). Scores were 99-91, 97-93, 96-94; no knockdowns were recorded.
In other action, welterweight Sam Vasquez (11-0) remained undefeated with a 4th round stoppage over Gilbert Venegas (12-11), while super lightweight Sammy Quinones (3-2) defeated Justin Johnson (6-5) by a 6 round unanimous decision. Scores were 58-56 and 60-54 twice. In the opening bout of the card, welterweights Eric Palmer (2-1-2) and Lee Kreisher (3-5-1) battled to a majority draw. Scores were 39-37 Kreisher and 38-38 twice.
