“Betillo” Gutierrez in action tonight

By Felipe Leon

Mayen Promotions, the most active club-sized promoter in Tijuana, will close out their year this upcoming Wednesday night at the Las Pulgas night club in the heart of Tijuana’s Revolution Avenue with another chock full night of boxing featuring former world title challenger Humberto “Betillo” Gutierrez (28-4-2, 20KOs) of Tijuana by way of Los Mochis, Mexico, versus Jose Luis Vazquez (3-2, 3KOs) of Tijuana in a eight round welterweight face off.

“Betillo”, who at one time held the interim WBC super featherweight title, has only fought five times since losing that title in late ’09. Since then, Gutierrez has gone 2-2-1 dropping his last fight two months ago against Armando “Chato” Robles in Mexicali. Last year Gutierrez traveled to the land of the rising sun, Japan, to challenge Takahiro Ao for the full-fledged version of the green and gold belt at 130 lbs. but fell in four rounds. On Wednesday night, Gutierrez will look to get back to his winning ways when he faces a much less experienced who according to only has five fights in his ledger. In his last fight, he stopped previously undefeated Jesus Valadez in the fourth and final round of an all out war in which both fighters went down. Despite his questionable record, it is no secret that Vazquez holds that intangible, heart.

Also featured on the night is Tijuana’s new favorite sensation Kenia “Jaguarcita” Enriquez (3-0, 2KOs). The undefeated female flyweight will put her perfect record on the line against Brenda Flores (1-0) who also has not tasted defeat. Enriquez is still in high school but since going pro earlier this year has captured the imagination of the Tijuana fight fans.

The always packed Mayen fight cards feature seven more fights including Los Angeles’ undefeated light middleweight Brandon “Gladiador” Adams (8-0, 4KOs) and local fan favorite Pastor Elenes (3-0, 1KO).

Las Pulgas night club is located in the middle of Revolution Avenue between 5th and 6th streets, a five minute taxi drive from the border. Doors open at 7:30 with the first fight thrown by 8:00pm. All ages welcome.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
