“Big Chief” Headlines in Houma

By Damien St. Pierre

Louisiana promoters Chad Broussard and Justin Verdin are teaming up to produce a huge 12 bout professional boxing event entitled “Smoking Hot”. The event will take place this coming Saturday night, October 5, 2013 at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center in Houma, Louisiana. Top billing for this exciting card goes to former Raceland, Louisiana native Morgan “Big Chief” Fitch (10-0). Fitch now hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has won all 10 of his bouts as a professional, including 4 via knockout. Standing in the way of this “homecoming” will be tough Texas native Tyrone Selders (8-6). This will mark the 7th straight undefeated opponent for the 30 year old Selders. This bout is scheduled for 6 rounds in the super middleweight division.

UBO Lightweight champion “Rock Hard Mighty” Mason Menard (25-1) of Rayne, Louisiana is scheduled to face Joseph Brady (13-6) of New Mexico in the co-feature of the night. Menard was scheduled to face David Torres in a title bout but Torres pulled out of the bout due to an injury in camp, Torres also pulled out of a July 28 scheduled bout with Menard.

Promoter Chad Broussard assures the former light heavyweight Brady will be in tip-top shape and will bring some heavy hands into this bout. Menard has won 23 straight bouts since his lone defeat and is one of Louisiana’s top prospects.

An interesting heavyweight bout will pit veteran Danny “Danny Boy” Batchelder (27-9-1) of Arizona against fan favorite Wesley Barbier (5-1-2) of nearby Larose, Louisiana in a 6 round bout.

Local favorite “Smiln” Martin Verdin (19-16-2) of Dulac, Louisiana is looking to bounce back against Texan Rayford Johnson (8-11) in a 6 round cruiserweight bout. In his last trip to Louisiana Johnson scored a TKO victory over former IBA Americas champion Will McIntyre. Verdin has gone 1-1-1 in his last 3 fights.

In a battle of pro debut fighters, nearby Larose, Louisiana native Payton Guidry will take on Devin Parker of New Orleans, Louisiana. Both of these fighters have made their mark on the local amateur scene and are ready to do the same in the professional ranks.

Unbeaten New Orleans heavyweight Terrance “Tank” Dumas (3-0, 2KO’s) will look to stay unbeaten in a 4 round bout. He will face Texan Shelton Richardson.

Also featured on this star studded card (all in separate bouts) will be co-promoter Justin Verdin (9-3), welterweight Devon Adams (1-0), rising middleweight Sergio Sarabia (4-0), heavyweight Thanasis Michaloudis, prospect O’Shanique Foster (3-0) and New Orleans native Ronald Rivas (2-0)
