Boxing back in Buffalo

Photo and report by Bob Caico

Don Patterson of Diaab Entertainment who brought the New York State Golden Gloves back to the City of Buffalo will delve into professional boxing with a pro-am card on June 18th. Five amateur bouts will precede the professional boxing program that will feature a battle for the vacant New York State Middleweight belt. Nick Brinson (7-1-1) from Geneva, NY will be challenged by Michael Walchuk (9-3) of Waterloo, Ontario. Brinson was stopped in a sensational battle for the NYS super middleweight belt in his last fight and Walchuk dropped a decision for the Canadian light heavyweight title in his previous bout. Both are moving down in weight for this main event in downtown Buffalo, NY.

In what is becoming a United States vs. Canada show, Tony Brinson (2-0) of Geneva faces off against Julius Bunda (3-1) of Kitchener, Ontario while Scott Paul of Niagara Falls, Canada hopes to ice Ivan Hernandez (0-1) of Dunkirk, NY., light heavy Steve Franjic (3-0) from Orangeville, Ontario battles Matt Garretson (debut) of West Virginia. Heavyweight Lorenzo Davis of Niagara Falls NY and light Middleweight Charlie Irvine of Niagara Falls, Ontario will be making their pro debuts in separate fights and Aleem “Hammer” Whitfield (2-0) of Geneva round out the under card.

The card will be held at the Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community City Campus.

Tickets can be purchased or any Carubba Collision location.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
