Boxing back in Detroit Friday

By Bob Ryder

Promoter Greg Ahrens along with matchmaker Carlos Llinas present a card of professional boxing at the Masonic Temple in downtown Detroit this Friday. Scheduled to appear in the main event is Darryl “Peoples Choice” Cunningham vs Eric Burke. Willie “Fortune 500” Fortune will head up the co main event 8 rounder. Also of interest to many will be the long awaited pro debut of celebrated local amateur star Eric DeLeon. Canadian heavyweight Ali Mansour returns to a Detroit ring after having just fought in Windsor two weeks prior. Looking to entertain fans in separate bouts are local favorites James Smith, Alejandro Hernandez, Leo Nolan, and Jeff Kugel.

Making her pro debut on the show is Jasmin “Mz Mayweather” Reed as she tangles with Tiana “Bombs” Barber. Reed has built a local reputation as one tough gal having engaged in many non-sanctioned bouts in the area. Now under the direction of her advisor Carlos Llinas, she is hoping to make rapid strides in the confines of the traditional squared circle.

As this is the first pro boxing show in Michigan since the passing of Emanuel Steward several tributes are planned along with the showing of a video in remembrance of boxing’s iconic trainer.

Tickets at $30 are available at the Masonic Temple door. Doors open at 7 PM with first bell at 8.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
