Boxing back in Kingsville, TX

By Jose Reyes

On August 15, 2009, Servando Gonzales of Lone Star Promotions links up with Team Solid Knock Out to provide Kingsville, Texas an entertaining night of professional boxing. It has been 14 plus years since Kingsville Texas has hosted a professional boxing card. The last being 1995 when Harold Warren won the NABF featherweight title and Jesse Benavides fought Manuel Avila in a ten rounder.

During that lapse, Jaime Cantu of the Kingsville Boxing Club has produced successful amateur boxers who have achieved elite status in the amateur ranks, to include Oscar Cantu currently ranked #5 in the flyweight division nationally. Some of his elite fighters have now turned professional and joined Team Solid Knockout Professional Boxing Stable also run by Jaime and they are excited to showcase their talents in Kingsville.

Jaime Cantu stated: “I am excited to showcase our young prizefighters here in their hometown at the professional level after leading successful amateur careers. Putting on a show like this is Jaime’s way to thank the community for their continued support. Which is why we priced the tickets so low.”

The main event of the fight card billed as “South Texas Young Guns” features Homer “El Oso” Fonseca (7-2-2) formerly ranked #2 in the heavyweight division as an amateur. Fonseca is coming off two impressive wins over Rafael Butler (34-6) and Gabriel Holguin (24-5).

The co-main event features up and coming slick southpaw light welterweight JD Charles (5-0) who is coming off a devastating 2nd round knock out win over the tough as nails Gilbert Elizondo (5-2-1).

Also on the card, local favorites Oscar Gonzales (4-2-1, 4 KOs), Isaac Guzman (1-0, 1 KO), Solomon Mungia (Pro-debut), Abel Fonseca (0-2-1) plus one more bout.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
