Boxing back in Rosarito

By Felipe Leon

After a successful night last February where up and coming featherweight Alejandro Sanabria defeated multi-time title challenger Rocky Juarez, Erik Morales’ Box Latino returns once again on Saturday, April 2nd, to Rosarito, MX, Municipal Gymnasium. The seven bout fight card which up and coming local talent put to the test in front of the enthusiastic boxing audience of Rosarito, a seaside tourist spot twenty minutes south of the San Diego-Tijuana border. In the main event, Tepic, MX’s Oscar “Finito” Gonzalez (21-1, 17KOs) will take on local veteran journeyman Arturo “Aguilita” Valenzuela (20-15, 17KOs) in a scheduled ten round featherweight bout. The match up will be the hard hitting Gonzalez’s first true test as Valenzuela of Tijuana, MX, has faced the much more fearsome opposition in Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson, Juan Luis “Perla Negra” Hernandez and the afore mentioned Sanabria.

In the semi-main event, hugely popular welterweight Javier “Pelon” Gomez (10-7, 7KOs) of Tijuana will go six rounds or less with Francisco Amezquita of Ensenada, MX, in a rematch of the war they had back in February at the same venue. After four rounds, Amezquita walked away with a majority decision and now Gomez wants another shot at redemption.

In a special attraction six flyweight six rounder, KO artist Jose Estrella (7-2, 6KOs) goes after another stoppage win versus Constancio Alvarado (1-2-4) of Ensenada, MX. After going up to bantamweight in early December of last year and giving a war to Luis “Chupacabras” Gomez in a losing effort, Estrella returned in early March and quickly dispatched Juan Manuel Armendariz in half a round. Now Estrella looks for a tougher challenge in Alvarado, a fighter who has faced Chris Avalos, pulled off draws against David “Flecha” Gaspar and highly touted Angel Magdaleno.

Four other fights flesh out the card including appearances by Mario “Popeye” Padilla and Jose Escarsega in separate bouts.

Tickets are available at the Rosarito, MX, Municipal Gymnasium box office. Doors open at 6pm with the first punch thrown at 7pm. For more info, please visit

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
