Boxing returns to the U.S. Virgin Islands on September 26, 2009 as 340 Promotions presents, “Boxing In Paradise IV” at the UVI Sports and Fitness center in beautiful St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Headlining the event will be a battle for the Fedecaribe Lightweight title between Juan Carlos Batista, 18-1, 14 KOs of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and Atlanta, Georgia’s Omri Lowther, 12-1, 8 KOs. The show will also feature the continued rise of St. Thomas’ own Beijing Olympians John and Julius Jackson, sons of former three-time world champion Julian “The Hawk” Jackson, and Jackson nephew Samuel Rogers. All three boys are undefeated at 3-0.
Caribbean flavor will continue to spice up the evening as Costa Rica’s undefeated Hanna Gabriel takes on former WBC champion Yvonne Ries in a female Jr. Middleweight clash.
The long awaited pro debut of St. Croix native Otoniel Ortiz will be on tap as well as La Romana, Dominican Republic’s Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna, 5-0, 5 KOs.
Co-promoter Lesley Comissiong stated “I am very proud to be a part of the development of boxing in the U. S. Virgin Islands.” 340 Promotions partner Sampson Lewkowicz added, “I strongly believe the U.S. Virgin Islands made a big statement to bring boxing back and give opportunity to the youths of the USVI with this beautiful pro and amateur show.”
In keeping with their continuing goal of improving and educating officials in the U.S. Virgin Islands, 340 Promotions will be conducting an officials seminar, to be headed up by esteemed referees and judges Steve Smoger and Roberto Ramirez Sr.
The show kicks off at 5:40 p.m. with the continuation of “Operation London 2012,” designed to cultivate local amateur representatives for the next Olympic Games. The professional segment will begin at 8:30 p.m.
