Boxing on the ice

WBC Super-Middleweight Champion Mikkel Kessler took a brief timeout from his busy training schedule in Berlin this week to visit Germany’s top Ice Hockey team, Eisbären Berlin. The Viking Warrior will return to the ring on September 25 when he takes on Allan Green in their decisive Super Six World Boxing Classic Group Stage 3 clash. The fight will serve as the grand opening of the state-of-the-art MCH Multiarena in Herning. Since this summer, gifted Danish ice-hockey international Mads Christensen plays for Berlin, and he showed his countryman his skills during a brief training session on the ice. Kessler returned the favour by teaching Mads some light punching combinations which “might be useful on the ice.”

Kessler said: “I like Ice Hockey. It is a tough sport. It is a great experience to watch it live inside a stadium. The Eisbären Berlin are a strong team and I wish them well for the upcoming season. I hope Mads will score a lot of goals for them.”

Germany´s biggest selling tabloid, Bild, dedicated almost an entire page to the meeting of the two Danes in Germany. “It was great to meet Mikkel,” Christensen said. “He is one of the best fighters in the world. I have a lot of respect for boxing – the training is incredibly hard and they are all in great shape. I wish him all the best for the fight in Herning and I am sure he will beat Green.”

The Kessler-Green fight, which will start around midnight Danish time, will again be televised by Danish Pay-Per-View Giant Viasat and also by SHOWTIME in the US. Tickets for the clash will go on sale soon.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
