Boxing returns to Hobbs, N.M.

By David Finger

Boxing returns to Hobbs, New Mexico this Saturday night (July 27th) as undefeated super middleweight prospect Gerardo Quintana (3-0-1, 3 KO’s) takes on fellow undefeated prospect Robert Josh Chavez (2-0, 0 KO’s) in a four round fight. 22-year old Quintana is already considered one of the best prospects to ever come out of Southeast New Mexico, and has electrified the local boxing scene after winning his first three fights by way of knockout. However, Quintana struggled in his last fight, being held to a draw on the undercard of the James Toney-Kenny Lemos by fellow undefeated prospect Chris Leyva. Still, few saw the draw as a major setback, and many local boxing fans are expected to come out in full force for Quintana’s homecoming. The 23-year old Chavez turned pro back in April, winning a decision over Mike Quezada. He followed up his victory with another decision over Quezada in June and is widely seen as the a legitimate prospect in his own rights with the skills to upset the local boy.

In the co-main event Clovis New Mexico’s Ricardo Rico Urquizo 0-0-1 takes on Los Lunas’ Manuel Eastman (1-3) in a four round light heavyweight fight.

Rounding off the card, welterweight Jason Davis (11-9-1, 3 KO’s) comes down to Hobbs from Vancouver, Washington to take on the ever dangerous TBA in a four round welterweight fight. In a rematch of a fight from October of last year, undefeated Jose Salinas (2-0, 2 KO’s) of Las Cruces takes on Victor Silva (1-2, 1 KO) of Socorro in a four round lightweight fight. Salinas stopped Silva in the third round of their first meeting. Welterweight Adam Vasquez of Las Cruces makes his professional debut as he takes on the popular Michael Herrera (0-3) of Roswell. Lubbock Texas’ Alex Hipotio (1-1, 1 KO) battles a TBA in a featherweight fight. And rounding off the card, winless Jesus Angel Pacheco (0-3) will take on winless Brandon Salazar (0-1) in a four round lightweight fight. Both fighters hail from Albuquerque.

The fight will be at the Club la Sierra in Hobbs, New Mexico. Door open at 6pm with the first fight starting at 7:30. General admission tickets are $30 and ringside tickets are $60. Tickets can be obtained by calling promoter Isidro Castillo at 575-263-9443.
