#1 ranked lightweight Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KOs) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KOs) were face to face Wednesday during the final press conference for their world title clash this Saturday at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland in a Matchroom Boxing presentation.

“I want to thank God for having me here, and I want to thank the people from Glasgow and Ricky Burns for this chance. I respect Ricky Burns a lot, he is a good champion,” Gonzalez said. “But I’m here to do my job in the ring, that’s why I’m here”.

Meanwhile, Burns, a former 130 pound WBO champion who will make his third defense of the lightweight belt, said that “we are trained for Jose Gonzalez, a hard puncher. We are focused in this fight for my fans here in Glasgow, and then on my way to bigger fights.”

The official weigh in for the Gonzalez-Burns fight will be on Friday, May 10, at the St Enoch Centre, open to the public.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
