Christopher Buthelezi retained his South African middleweight title when he outpointed mandatory challenger Makhosonke Zwengu over 12 rounds at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre over the past weekend.
The 31-year-old Buthelezi from Durban who was making the second defence of his title was having his first fight since September 2011.
In a fight that never rose to any heights the champion and Zwengu, 26, from Uitenhage mauled and pushed their way through twelve untidy rounds with the ring rusty Buthelezi doing enough to take the decision.
Buthelezi took his record to 21-12-3; 9 and Zwengu who is sometimes referred as Makhosandile Zwengu saw his reported record drop to 5-8; 2.
In the best fight of the day former South African junior welterweight champion Sikhulule Sidzumo fighting at middleweight fought to an eight round draw with Giovanni Bushby.
The southpaw Sidzumo improves his record to 18-6-5; 12 and Busby’s reported record goes to 4-2-1; 3.
