Butterbean to fight Down Under

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Famed American heavyweight Eric “Butterbean” Esch (77-9-4, 58 KOs) will clash with Aussie Kirk Lawton (1-1, 1 KO) over four rounds at the Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, NSW, Australia on Saturday. Butterbean, the self-proclaimed “King of the four-rounders,” is best remembered for scoring a knockdown over heavyweight great Larry Holmes in losing a ten round decision in 2002. This is the second trip to Australia for the American as back in 2005 he was defeated by Baden Oui in a major upset. Butterbean’s biggest win was in 1998, when he scored a TKO in round one over world heavyweight challenger Peter McNeeley. Butterbean is 46 years old and stands 5’11. Lawton 41 years old and 6’1. Promoter is Vlad Wharton of Millenium Events.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
