Unbeaten Randy Caballero will fight Manuel Roman in a scheduled 10 round bantamweight bout on Friday, August 24th, manager Frank Espinoza confirmed to Fightnews.com on Wednesday morning. An intriguing bout between once-beaten lightweights could also land on that date as Michael Perez will take on Fidel Maldonado in a scheduled 10 round bout. The card, which would be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, will likely headline a “ShoBox: the New Generation” card.
Although no venue has been officially named, the card could land at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, according to Gordon Hall, who is the Vice President of Production at Showtime. Hall, who is also the Executive Producer of “ShoBox: The New Generation,” spoke to Fightnews.com on Friday evening.
Caballero (15-0, 8 KOs), from nearby Coachellla, stopped overmatched Jamal Parram in the fifth round of his last fight on June 23rd. Prior to that bout on March 16th, he won a 10 round unanimous decision over Jose Luis Araiza. However, the veteran Araiza exposed some of Caballero’s defensive flaws in that bout.
Roman (15-1-3, 6 KOs), from Paramount, CA, also scored a knockout in his last fight on June 15th. He knocked out Cristian Aguilar in the third round in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.
He has mostly fought as a flyweight or super flyweight in his career. However, he has fought above that weight in his last three fights, where he has fought in Mexico. He is unbeaten in those bouts since he lost an eight round split decision to Anthony Villareal in April of 2009.
Perez (16-1, 10 KOs), from Newark, NJ, stopped Eric Cruz in the second round of his last bout on June 30th. Prior to that bout, he was forced to retire after the sixth round of his last fight against Omar Figueroa.
Maldonado (13-1, 11 KOs), from Albuquerque, NM, was stopped in the second round of his last fight on April 28th by Fernando Carcamo.
