After his very difficult fight on Friday against surprising challenger Jeffrey Mathebula, IBF/WBA jr featherweight champion Celestino “Pelenchin” Caballero has hinted that he may step up to the featherweight division. For some time now, the 5’11″ Panamanian champion has mentioned he is finding it increasingly difficult to stay in the 122lb weight class, which may explain why after handily winning the first five rounds, “Pelenchin” became increasingly tired and listless in his fight against his South African challenger. Caballero had to dig deep to win the last two rounds of the bout (on the scorecards of two judges) and salvage his crown. “My arms felt so heavy and I just had no energy,” he said. It is probable that, if indeed Caballero does step up in weight, he would challenge current WBA interim featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa.
