Undefeated world two-time world champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon, tipped the scale at 112.5 pounds in the last pre weigh-in ordered by the Puerto Rican Boxing Commission. The limit for the seven day pre weigh-in is 113.4. “I left the gym yesterday at 107.5 and after I work out today I should be close to 107 pounds again,” said the WBO 108-pound champion. Calderon will leave Monday for New York, for his first fight ever at Madison Square Garden as the semi main event on the card that his good friend Miguel Cotto will headline on Saturday, June 13 in the “Mecca of Boxing.”
“It’s something I have looked forward for a long time and I can’t wait to get there”, said Calderon, who was given a big send off by the local baseball youth all-star team that came to see him train today. His own son Ivan Jr, got in the ring to play along with his famous father for a few minutes.
Calderon will defend his WBO belt against tough Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol. The fight will be seen free in Puerto Rico on Directv channel 161. “I very happy that my fans will get to see my fight in Puerto Rico, it’s a big honor for me to be part of this card and for my fans to see it for free is great,” said Calderon.
Calderon arrives Monday in New York to promote the fight at various events. On Wednesday he will meet Mayol face to face for the first time in the final press conference leading to the big card on Saturday.
