After the unification bout between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns and IBF lightweight champion Miguel “Titere” Vazquez, supposed to be held on April 20, the #1 challenger in the WBO, Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez, is available for a world title fight against Burns or any classified boxer. Peter Rivera, PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) Vice-President, said they have begun to work in this world chance for Gonzalez, an unbeaten fighter with a record of 21-0, 17 KOs and the WBO lightweight Latino champion.
“By the fall of the Burns vs Vazquez fight, we want to say that Chelo Gonzalez is available to fight for this title, if is against Burns or against any other of the classified fighters for an interim title bout if Burns is not available. Burns didn’t defend his title since September, 2012, and now, again, won’t fight. Also, there is information of a split between Burns and his promoter, Frank Warren, whose company should present the show”, Rivera said. “We are working in this first opportunity for Chelo Gonzalez and he is ready for next month if it’s possible”.
Gonzalez came off a win by TKO over Mexican Alejandro “Soma” Rodriguez on February 2 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Meanwhile, Burns (35-2, 10 KOs), a former 130 pounds WBO champion with two defenses of the WBO lightweight belt, fought for the last time on September 22, 2012, when he knocked out Kevin Mitchell.
