Campillo files protest

By Flattop

Former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo filed an appeal Friday morning with the WBA – including all of the necessary documents and fees – to contest the split decision that was rendered for his January 29th title fight with Beibut Shumenov. Shumenov won a controversial split decision which was widely criticized by ringside observers and the television commentators. The WBA was also critical of the selections of the judges chosen by the Nevada State Athletic Commission because the sanctioning body had recommended several judges that had received special schooling and instructions at seminars that were designed to reduce the possibility of controversial scoring and/or inept judging but the NSAC selected only one of the judges referred by the WBA for the January 29th Beibut-Shumenov rematch. The NSAC-appointed judges Patricia Jarman and Jerry Roth respectively scored the bout at 117-111 and 115-113 in favor of Shumenov while the judge suggested by the WBA – Levi Martínez – had Campillo ahead at 117-111.
