WBC super welterweight world champion Canelo Alvarez and WBA super welterweight world champion Austin Trout held an international media conference call on Wednesday to discuss their April 20 world championship unification bout at the Alamodome In San Antonio, Texas.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez: “This is a blood revenge that I’m looking at. I was there at the fight when Trout beat my brother, Rigoberto. I felt such an inability to do something, but now it’s here and I’m very motivated and that is a big factor.”
“People are focused just on my power, but they don’t see that I’m very fast and know how to move in the ring, as well. Trout is a strong fighter. He showed it with Cotto. But that’s what makes me very happy, motivated, working hard and we’ll show it all come fight night.”
Austin Trout: “We beat his brother two years ago and now it’s so important now? I’m not buying it…if Canelo was fighting me for revenge, why wouldn’t he fight the other guys who beat his bro? I’m not the only one.”
(On getting a fair shake in Texas) “I can’t focus, use any energy to dwell on things I can’t control. All I can do is focus on things I can control and that’s what I have to do in the ring…if it goes to the judges, then that’s really in God’s hands. If the judges want to jerk me, that’s between them and God.”
Oscar de la Hoya: “I’ve compared this fight to my fight with Quartey. It was my job to prove myself and this is Canelo’s defining fight”
(On a rematch clause) “If it’s going to be a great fight, why not do it again?” (Note: Trout tweeted that only Canelo has the option for a rematch.)
