Cannon Shot of New Talent

By Felipe Leon

The boxing hotbed of Tijuana, Mex, with their vast array of current fighters, former champions and up and coming prospects hosts yet another fight night when Zanfer Promotions presents “Cannon Shot of New Talent” this Friday, October 22nd, at the Municipal Auditorium in the heart of the border town. In the eight round lightweight main event, local favorite Fernando “Cuervito” Garcia (12-3, 8KOs) takes on Byron Gonzalez (4-0-2, 3KOs) of Riverside, CA, in a rematch of their six round war last August. The fight card will be broadcast internationally by Azteca America, check your local listings.

In their last face off on the undercard of Joksan Hernandez vs. Ira Terry which many called the fight of the night, Garcia took the initiative early and controled the bout until Gonzalez raised the pressure and put in a late surge to force all three judges to call it a draw. Now with two more rounds to go, the Tijuana audience hopes to have a clear winner between the two warriors.

In the featherweight semi-main event, KO artist Eduarco Arcos (16-2, 13KOs) returns home to Tijuana after two straight losses to take it out on Gabriel Piña (8-2-2, 5KOs) of Ensenada, Mex, over six rounds. In another clash scheduled for six rounds, undefeated flyweight Maximino Flores (6-0, 5KOs) takes on Rafael Alvarado (3-1-1, 1KO), both of Ensenada, while lightweight Ezequiel Avilez (1-0), also of Ensenada, goes for his second win when he faces Tijuana’s Adan Gamboa (5-5, 3KOs).

At super flyweight, Guadalupe Barreras (1-0) will try to stay undefeated while Juan Salas (0-1), both of Tijuana, will try to earn his first victory in a four rounder. In a rare showing of Mexican big men, Rogelio Ruvalcaba (1-0) matches up against Osiris Bañuelos (0-1) in a four round light heavyweight fight.

Also scheduled to appear is Tijuana’s breakout star of the year Jose “Tigre” Cayetano (8-0, 3KOs) against the always feared TBA at bantamweight while an opponent is also being sought for Jorge Silva (12-1, 11KOs), also of Tijuana, at welterweight.

Tickets available at the Tijuana Municipal Auditorium. Doors open at 7:00pm with the first punch thrown at 8:00pm.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
