WBC #12 super featherweight Carlos “El Propheto Mexicano” Cardenas (11-3-1, 8 KOs), originally from Venezuela, retained his WBC Continental Americas title in impressive fashion topping Mexican all-action journeyman Rafael Urias (22-18-1, 17 KOs) in a heated war with numerous knockdowns on Saturday night at the Hotel Fairmont Princess in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. Cardenas floored Urias with a jab at the end of the first and both fighters went down hard in the second. Urias was also decked twice in both the third and the fourth stanzas by major left bombs of Cardenas before failing to answer the bell to start round five.
The son of a legend with the same name Carlos Zarate Jr. moved up to 7-0 with 5 KOs after a first round destruction of debutant Roberto Esqueda (now 0-1). Zarate landed a vicious left hook onto Esqueda’s nose and down he went and out being too dazed to compete further.
Upset specialist Giovanni Caro, the WBC #17 hard-hitting Mexican of Russian origin, is now 16-8-4 with 14 KOs after the second-round stoppage of Columbian guest Adolfo Ramos (17-9-1, 9 KOs). Caro, who had previously defeated such boxers as Oscar Ibarra, Ricardo Castillo, Carlos Yanez and Alex De Oliveira, retained his WBC Fecarbox super bantamweight title in process.
