The reigning WBA heavyweight world champion (in recess) Ruslan Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KOs) will return to action on February 7th against the unbeaten Carl Davis Drumond (26-0, 20 KOs) at the Stadthalle Rostock. Two American heavyweight fighters have been brought in to be his sparring partners. The one is Leo Nolan (27-1, 10 KOs) of Detroit, Michigan and the other is Terry “The Troublemaker” Smith (30-6-1, 18 KOs) of Little Rock, Arkansas. Both have been in the Universum Gym in Hamburg for a week now. The first sparring rounds of Chagaev weren’t supervised by his trainer Michael Timm, who is currently in Düsseldorf with Ina Menzer in preparation for her upcoming world title fight against Esther Schouten this Saturday. Timm’s assistant trainer Artur Grigorian is supervising the sessions at the moment. The former world champion Grigorian said, “The first sparring went really well for Ruslan. He knows what to do although he will make a slower start this week. It has been a long break after his Achilles injury.” Commenting on his first sparring, Chagaev said, “The last sparring I had done was in May last year. Afterwards I had a long rehabilitation period which was quite tiring. But now I’m looking forward to the next weeks. I don’t feel anything from my injury and I’m very happy to be back. I can hardly wait to be back in Rostock.”

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
