Cleverly: Brähmer the real champion

WBO interim light heavyweight titleholder Nathan Cleverly says he wants to win the full WBO light heavyweight title the hard way by taking on Jurgen Brähmer. The unbeaten Welshman lifted the interim crown on Saturday night in Liverpool with a hard-fought points win over Nadjib Mohammedi. Full champion Brähmer is poised to meet WBA king Beibut Shumenov in January in a juicy unification fight.

Cleverly is insistent that he wants to meet the winner of that fight – and not get the world title handed to him. “I will consider Brähmer the real champion until I beat him,” said Cleverly. “If he loses to Shumenov, then I’ll want to fight Shumenov, it’s as simple as that.”

“It was fantastic to win the interim title at the weekend, and rounded off an amazing year for me after I won the European title in February. Hopefully I will meet the winner and they won’t try and duck out of fighting me. I’m unbeaten in 20 odd fights, I’ve won the British, Commonwealth and European titles and now got the interim belt as well. I’ve arrived at world level now and I’m still only 23.

“Mohammedi was a tricky opponent and I wasn’t at my very best on Saturday, but he was a completely different fighter to the one I had trained for. Although it wasn’t my best performance, I learned a lot and came through. Now I’m more than ready for the likes of Brähmer and Shumenov.”

Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.
