Cocktail reception opens WBA directorate meeting in Santo Domingo, DR

By Boxing Bob Newman

The WBA directorate meeting kicked off with an informal cocktail party on the rooftop pool level of the Santo Domingo Sheraton in the Domincan Republic Thursday night. After some schedule wrangling to allow for the governing bodies summit in Cancun last week with the WBA, WBC and IBF, the meeting was switched from original locale and date of Punta Cana, DR last weekend to Santo Domingo this weekend.

The three day schedule will also include another edition of the WBA K.O. Drugs boxing tournament with a mega fight card of at least a dozen fights planned at the hotel. Former champs Roberto Duran and Victor “Luvi” Callejas attended the cocktail event as well as board members including WBA president Gilberto Mendoza. Promoters Sampson Lewkowicz, Vlad Hrunov and Gary Shaw were on hand, as well as other boxing representatives and ring officials.

Friday will begin with day long meetings which will include updates on everything from the recent shakeup in the PABA, perspectives on the recent WBA/WBC/IBF summit in Cancun and more. Fridays meetings will conclude with a dinner in the city.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
