Mthalane KOs Nunez to retain IBF title

By Gabriel F. Cordero

IBF flyweight champion Moruti “Baby Face” Mthalane (29-2, 20 KOs) retained his title with a spectacular eighth round KO of Ricardo “El Matematico” Nunez (24-3, 20 KOs) on Saturday night at the Roberto Duran Arena in Panama City, Panama. Mthalane dropped Nunez in round one, but “El Matematico” roared back to drop Mthalane at the end of round three. The champion was not to be denied, however, as he battered Nunez to the deck in round eight as the bout was waved off. Time was 2:41.

Former WBA interim flyweight champion Luis “El Nica” Concepcion (26-3, 20 KOs) scored an eight round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Pablo Carrillo (9-1-1, 4 KOs). Scores were 78-74, 78-74, 78-75.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
