Three division world champion Miguel Cotto told reporters in Puerto Rico that he will return on June 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Cotto is hoping to challenge WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez for his 160lb title. “Winning that title at 160lbs is the main feature for the fight,” Cotto told reporters. “If my goal wasn’t to win the fourth title, I would have agreed to fight Canelo. A fourth title is an attractive alternative for me.” No Puerto Rican boxer has ever won titles in four separate weight divisions. Negotiations for Cotto-Martinez are in the preliminary stages, but both camps are interested in making the fight happen. As for Cotto-Canelo, Cotto stated that Canelo is only 23 years old and that fight is still possible.
