After Miguel Cotto’s devastating third round KO over Delvin Rodriguez Saturday night in Orlando, the name of WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was prominently mentioned as possibly being Cotto’s next opponent. “The added value of being the first Puerto Rican to achieve a world title in four different weight divisions is something attractive to me,” Cotto admitted. “In due time, I’ll sit with my group and with Freddie (Roach) and we’ll weigh the options and discuss Martinez and other candidates.” Should the fight be made, Roach stated that he knows how to beat Martinez and he thinks he has “the right guy to do it this time.”
A response from the Martinez camp wasn’t long in coming. Sampson Lewkowicz, advisor to Martinez, tweeted that Maravilla is willing to fight Miguel Cotto at a catchweight of 158 lbs with his WBC belt on the line.
