IBF top rated minimumweight Denver “The Excitement” Cuello-Sinwangcha gave Ivan Meneses a ten round boxing clinic and won by a wide unanimous decision despite suffering a sprained right shoulder in the third round. The Filipino banger knocked Meneses down in the very first round courtesy of a left hook to the head but suffered a bad cut on the right eyebrow after an accidental clash of heads in the fourth round. The opposite stances of both fighters brought more clash of heads which worsened the cut of Cuello and even cost him a point deduction in the fifth round.
“I could hardly use my right arm since the third round. I had a bad sprain and my right shoulder was badly swelling. I was basically a one handed fighter from round three and up. The cut got worse because of several headbutts which were untintentional. I couldn’t use my right hand and I couldn’t see perfectly. I just won the fight like a chess game. I can’t stand toe to toe with Meneses because of the injury.” Cuello told this scribe via skype.
“I hope I did not disappoint my countrymen and fans. I came to fight but accidents really happen. I wanted to win by knockout but after my sprain I just fought to survive and still win. My and my manager will attend the world title clash between Zhao and Martinez in China. I will be fighting the winner of that bout and this time, it will be a world title fight. I want to thank all my fans and countrymen for their support and prayers. of course I dedicate this win to my wife Rowena and son Prince!” Cuello said in closing.
Cuello’s trainer and manager Aljoe Jaro was still happy with the win despite not getting another KO victory. “A win is a win. What matters is Denver won and he did so with a great display of heart and courage. I admit he was a bit in a hurry in the very first round. He wanted to eat Meneses alive. He was punching so hard causing his muscles and ligaments to twitch tremendously thus causing the sprain. Had he been patient, he could’ve knocked out Meneses before round six. But it was a great fight. 108 lbs is not Denver’s natural weight, but he still displayed power in that category. He will fight the winner of the China WBC world title bout in October. Once he is a world champion, we can challenge Roman Gonzales. That is the fight we really want.”
Team Cuello is set to go to Los Angeles from Mexico and is expected to be back in Manila by Wednesday October 3.
